Wednesday Mornings (3/27, 4/10, 4/24, 5/8 & 5/22)
Rachel and Luisa bring the perspective of diverse spiritual backgrounds to the question “How do we respectfully and meaningfully engage the spirituality of our clients?” Come deepen your understanding of your own story and how that plays a part in this question. Develop your knowledge of religious and spiritual diversity. Learn tools you can use with clients from a variety of backgrounds. Come gain practical tools and deeper insight into holistically serving your clients through engaging their spirituality.
Participants will be able to:
1. Review literature on the benefits and risks of addressing spirituality in therapy
2. Build spiritual competencies through learning some ways to ethically use spirituality in psychotherapy
3. Provide clinically useful definitions of spirituality including the distinctions and connections between spirituality and religion
4. Develop an understanding of the clinician's own spiritual autobiography and how it may impact work with clients
5. Determine effective ways to do psychotherapy with clients of diverse spiritualities and religions
6. Identify some of the main characteristics and beliefs of world religions that may affect clinical treatment
7. Discern between helpful and harmful spirituality
8. Identify interventions for use with helpful or harmful spirituality
9. Develop clinical tools in working with religious clients
10. Explore religion, spirituality and mental health as it pertains to improving functioning and psychological wellbeing
CONTRIBUTING SPEAKERS:
Rachel Kornfield Becker, LCSW
Rachel studied Sociology and Christian Formation and Ministry at Wheaton College (2007) and Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh (MSW, 2014). As of 2014, Rachel started practicing soul care at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute through individual and couples counseling. Throughout that time, Rachel has considered spiritual integration in her work a priority and continually explored, researched, read and deepened her use of spiritual integration with a diversity of clients. Rachel believes that every individual is on a journey of healing and spiritual discovery. She takes joy in joining her clients and seminar participants wherever they find themselves in that process.
Luisa V. Nayhouse, M.A., M.S. LPC
Luisa completed her Masters of Arts in Psychology at Duquesne University in 1996 and a Masters of Science in Applied Developmental Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh in 2006. She is a licensed Professional Counselor with over twenty years of experience as a psychotherapist. Luisa draws from Family Systems, Eastern Meditative Practices and Humanistic-Existential Psychology as well as a broad range of other theories in serving her clients. She has worked in a variety of settings that include, community behavioral health facilities, hospitals, and social service agencies. Luisa’s approach is holistic including encouraging reconnection with clients’ faith communities or spiritual organizations. She values the purposefulness of meaningful dialogue in creating more peaceful and harmonious families and communities.

Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6727. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. This program is being offered for 10 NBCC (2/session) continuing education clock hours.

Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
You may park at The Calvary Episcopal Church is located at 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 in the gravel section at the back of the parking lot and walk down Marchand Street two house you will see our logo on the yellow door. The nearest bus stop is "East Liberty Station". The building is accessible.
What's the refund policy?
Full refunds are available up to two weeks before the start of the program. After that no refunds will be made.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, you don't need to print anything out. Please sign in when you arrive.
What if I can't make one of the days?
The cost includes all 5 sessions, and we can not discount any out of the cost. If you are earning CE units, you will only earn for what sessions you are present. Each session is worth 2 continuing education clock hours and the entire Seminar is worth 10 continuing education clock hours.
